Co-founder & CEO

Armaan Ali is the cofounder and Chief Executive of Human Capital. He chairs the investment committee, is responsible for capital raising and helps set the company’s strategic vision. In his role, he also oversees the development of Human Capital’s network of 5,000+ members. To date, Human Capital has raised more than $125 million and has invested in companies including Anduril, Applied Intuition, Brex, Bolt, Clumio, HVMN, Impira, Livongo Health (NASDAQ: LVGO), Nova Credit, Observe, Shogun Enterprises, Snowflake Computing and Surprise HR. Prior to founding Human Capital, Armaan was a member of the investment team at General Catalyst. He holds a BA in Economics from Stanford University, where he cofounded and served as CFO of the Stanford Social Entrepreneurial Students’ Association (SENSA). Armaan’s exposure to business came at an early age. He began serving as the Official Taste- Tester at his family’s confectionery business in Bangladesh at age six. He now shares his passion for snacking with his miniature Bernese mountain dog, Turtle.

Baris Akis is the cofounder and President of Human Capital. He is responsible for setting the company’s strategic vision and leads the company’s work with ambitious entrepreneurs to bring their ideas to life. As a thought partner to Human Capital’s entrepreneurial members, Baris has supported the visionary founders of companies including Brex, Bolt, Impira, Nova Credit, Shogun Enterprises and Surprise HR. Prior to founding Human Capital, Baris attended Stanford University where he graduated early with a BS in Computer Science. Over the course of his freshman and sophomore years, he founded and sold a web-development automation business. Baris also cofounded and served as president of the Stanford Social Entrepreneurial Students’ Association (SENSA). Baris spent most of his time at Stanford meeting with hundreds of his ambitious peers and discussing ways he can support their careers. His insights from those conversations created the foundational ideas behind Human Capital. To date, Baris has personally guided over 500 software engineers through critical career decisions and negotiations. He has a deep understanding of the engineer’s career trajectory and brings this perspective to all of Human Capital’s strategic decisions and offerings. Raised in Istanbul, Baris always had a passion for supporting ambitious peers. When he was in high school, Baris founded the Youth Vision Association, a national non-profit, that partnered with the United Nations to help underprivileged high school students develop critical professional and communication skills.

Gelila (UPenn ’11) loves finding potential in students and connecting them to life-changing opportunities in tech and beyond. Prior to joining HumanCapital, Gelila led the University Recruiting teams at Quora and Coursera where she partnered closely with various business units to recruit interns and new grads. She has lived in various parts of the world, but considers California home. Outside of work, Gelila enjoys playing tennis, discovering new cultures through travel, and mastering the art of parenthood.

Brandon Beckhardt

Chief of Staff

Brandon (Stanford CS ’16) brings his love for building and understanding systems to many aspects of Human Capital. He leads the development of our platform, which supports the automation, infrastructure, and resources that allows us to make our impact at scale and serves as Chief of Staff to our CBO. During his undergrad, Brandon was one of the initial Human Capital team members at Stanford and was also on the gymnastics team while completing his CS degree. After graduation, Brandon joined Lending Club as a software engineer, where he worked on encryption and optical character recognition projects. After some time in industry, he realized that helping build Human Capital and shaping the industries of the future would require his complete attention and decided to join the team full time. Brandon is driven by innovations that make society more productive and life more fruitful. In his spare time, you can find him running, reading, or hosting dinner parties.

Peter Cetale

Junior Principal

Prior to joining Human Capital, Peter Cetale was the CEO and co-founder of the SaaS startup Religio. The company provided payment solutions processing and CRM systems to nonprofits across the country. Peter led the company to be successfully acquired in December of 2019. Peter is a graduate of Cornell University class of 2019. During his time at Cornell, he was the co-founder and President of the Cornell Entrepreneurship Club, where he helped connect engineers to nontechnical founders to start companies. Additionally, he was the co-founder and Vice President of the Cornell Marketing Organization. Peter currently serves as the President and founder of Ivy League Entrepreneurs, which combines all eight Ivy League schools entrepreneurship clubs. Mr. Cetale is on the board of various startups and, in addition to his interest in venture, enjoys playing chess in his spare time.

Cami (Johns Hopkins MS ’19 and University of Utah BS ’18) has always enjoyed helping people, and spent her 4 years in Utah working with kids at Primary Children’s Hospital while studying health psychology. After graduating, Cami pursued her Master’s of Bioethics at Johns Hopkins, where she explored the ethical questions of relationships, climate change, and the responsibilities of upcoming technology. While at Hopkins, Cami helped develop a support group for adolescent transgender patients, and is excited to bring that same passion and enthusiasm of supporting others to Human Capital! Cami grew up outside of Philly, and enjoys traveling to spend time with friends, comedy shows, hosting game nights and petting dogs.

Katie Duplessis

Katie has spent most of her career working in higher education. She began as a writing teacher at the community college level and then transitioned to student services. After a few years in student services, she pivoted to higher education administration, where she spent over a decade at Stanford University managing both the Neurosciences Ph.D. Program (School of Medicine) as well as the Public Policy Program (School of Humanities & Sciences). Katie has an MA in English and a certificate in teaching composition. In her free time, Katie can be found exercising, traveling, and trying out new restaurants in Oakland, where she lives with her husband.

Zabie Elmgren

Principal

Zabie (Harvard ‘18) is a Principal at Human Capital, working to connect our high-potential engineers to the diverse set of opportunities we represent. While completing her undergraduate degrees in computer science and economics, Zabie interned at a number of large and small tech companies in the Bay Area and in Washington DC. Zabie helped launch the Human Capital team at Harvard and was both an Associate and Campus Director before joining the HQ team full-time. Outside of engineering, Zabie was on Harvard's Varsity Rowing Team and grew up between Oakland and Squaw Valley as a competitive racer and (later) extreme skier.

Amy Herbertson

Amy helps people and teams achieve their full potential. Since graduating Stanford class of 2011, she's worked in client services and technical program management at mid-sized tech companies. She's excited to partner with ambitious engineers and match them to companies that make their heart sing and their brains buzz! Outside of work, you can find Amy training for an Ironman, or reading at her favorite cafes in North Beach.

Ashwin Hira

Chief Business Officer

Ashwin leads investor relations and fund operations. In his role he helps in fundraising, reporting and communications with investors, managing the back office and preparing the platform for scaling though building systems and processes. He also frequently liaises with our portfolio company CEOs to help them think through growth, operations and fundraising. Ashwin has 25 years of work experience spread across management consulting at Arthur Andersen and McKinsey, then investing at Mubadala and Softbank and also was Chief Business Officer at a consumer hardware startup called Hello. Ashwin is a Chemical Engineer from University of Pune in India and an MBA from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

Emma (Michigan '20) is an associate on the investment team at Human Capital with a focus on entrepreneurial college students. While at Michigan, she served as President of Sigma Eta Pi (the professional entrepreneurship fraternity) for 2 years, Student Director of Fellowship for the Entrepreneurs Leadership Program and as a venture partner for Contrary Capital, a university-focused venture fund. Additionally, Emma was a Chief of Staff intern to Quicken Loans Chairman Dan Gilbert as well as an intern at Detroit Venture Partners, Human Ventures and SeatGeek. Emma primarily grew up in Sweden and Belgium. During that time, she ran an incubator in high school mentoring students starting their own companies and mentored teams that won 2 MIT global pitch competitions. This led to a passion to support female entrepreneurs and she spent time traveling around Europe teaching girls about STEM and entrepreneurship.

Daniel brings 8 years of agency recruiting experience to the Human Capital industry practice. He has focused on the SF Bay Area startup scene his entire career and is most excited by mission-driven companies that help to shape the future. After leaving college his Junior year to begin recruiting full time he returned to graduate from Arizona State University in 2014 with a B.S in Communication. Outside of work Daniel enjoys barbecuing and going to concerts with his wife.

Born and raised in Freeport, GB, The Bahamas but have spent most of my adult life bouncing between the US, UK, and Nassau, The Bahamas. My undergraduate degree was in Law with Business Finance from the University of Buckingham, and my Masters in Law from the University of California, Berkeley. Most of my work experience is from the financial services and legal fields.

Ryan comes to us from Airbnb where he most recently supported the engineering, product and design leaders on the Guest team. He studied linguistics and psychology at UCLA and briefly enrolled at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis post-graduation to study clinical audiology. At Human Capital, Ryan supports our Chief Executive and Chief Business Officer and brings a programmatic and operational focus to how Human Capital operates internally and externally. In his spare time he enjoys traveling, yoga and reading a good book.

Shawn (Carnegie Mellon ECE; UCLA MBA) is a Principal on the University Team. He began his career working in technical sales and technical project management roles at Texas Instruments, Google, and Box. After earning his MBA, Shawn worked in venture capital on the Investment Team at BuildersVC, where he grew his interest in early-stage, high-growth tech companies. At Human Capital, Shawn draws from his versatile background to share his perspective with our University Members. Outside of work, Shawn loves working-out, playing chess, and shooting pool.

Andrew Rising

Andrew is a Director at Human Capital focused on building our experienced-hire recruiting engine. He comes to us through an acquisition of Khonvo, a tech-enabled recruiting firm he co-founded 3 years ago. Prior to Khonvo, Andrew spent time at Redpoint Ventures working with early stage founders helping them build and execute on their technical hiring roadmap. He also helped scale Addepar during its formative era and spent time at Google building engineering teams. Outside of the talent realm, Andrew enjoys playing hockey, golf, and exploring the dramatic scenery California offers. He lives in the South Bay with his wife and their dog, Frankie.

Jess (UC Berkeley '13) is originally from Orange County. At Berkeley she studied Political Science and Education. After college, Jess moved to rural Arkansas to teach 9th grade English through Teach For America. During her four years there, she built out after school programs and helped lead community organizing efforts to rebuild her students' public school. After teaching, Jess moved back to the Bay Area to join TFA's recruitment team and participate in public policy fellowships. At Human Capital, Jess works on Project Management and Learning & Development. When she's not at work, you can find Jess at art museums, going to music shows, or hunting for the best burrito in the city.

Erzsi Sousa

Head of Marketing

Erzsi leads marketing at Human Capital. Before joining the team, she ran brand marketing at Stripe and product brand marketing at Google Cloud, and before that, she did ad sales and account management at Microsoft. She studied Communication and English (and played club soccer) at the University of Pennsylvania, home of the Quaker mascot—not far from where she grew up and attended an actual Quaker school. She hikes, bikes, kayaks and camps out frequently with her husband, 2 daughters and golden retriever in the East Bay.

Neelan studied EECS at the University of Illinois and graduated in December of 2018. While on campus Neelan co-founded two startups and led EntreCORPS as a partner. Neelan joined Human Capital as a Principal in 2019 and works closely with our University members. Outside of work you can find him struggling to learn how to cook, listening to lots of music, and reading anything/everything about tech.

Laura Wong

Laura is originally from the LA area (Go Dodgers!). She graduated from UC Berkeley in 2011 (Go Bears!) with a BA in Anthropology with minors in Global Poverty and Public Policy, UC Hastings in 2014 with a JD, and the University of London SOAS in 2014 with an LLM in International Economic Law. After law school, she worked at a San Francisco-based law firm that specializes in investment funds.
